Florida Electrical Code: Which Edition Applies in 2026

Florida doesn't publish a standalone electrical volume. The National Electrical Code arrives through the Florida Building Code, and the edition in force is the 8th Edition (2023), effective December 31, 2023.

The edition in force

The Florida Building Commission's own page states it plainly: the effective date for the Florida Building Code, 8th Edition (2023), is December 31, 2023.

That same page carries one link out to the materials for the 2026 update, including the tracking charts. It posts no draft 9th Edition, so the 8th Edition is the only Florida Building Code edition it shows.

There's no separate electrical volume

People search for a Florida Building Code electrical volume and expect a book like the Building or Residential volumes. There isn't one today.

The Commission's National Electrical Code page says NFPA 70 is adopted in Chapter 27 of the Florida Building Code, Building, and NFPA 70A, the requirements for one and two family dwellings, is adopted in Chapter 33 of the Florida Building Code, Residential.

That same page tells readers to consult the volumes of the different editions of the Florida Building Code to work out which edition of NFPA 70 or NFPA 70A they adopt. It doesn't name an edition year itself.

What we couldn't confirm, and why we're saying so

We couldn't confirm from a page we fetched which NFPA 70 edition the 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code names. The ICC Digital Codes pages that carry Chapter 27 and the referenced standards chapter render their text through script and returned nothing readable.

What we can confirm from a Commission document is that the 2020 code development cycle, the one that produced the 7th Edition (2020), worked from the 2017 National Electrical Code. Its electrical technical advisory committee document is titled for that edition.

So if you need the exact NFPA 70 edition your permit is reviewed against, ask your building department rather than trusting any page, including this one, that hasn't read the chapter itself.

The statute behind it

Section 553.73 founds the Florida Building Code on a set of model codes, and it names the National Electrical Code among them alongside the International Building, Residential, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fuel Gas and Existing Building Codes.

The same section requires the Commission to adopt an updated Florida Building Code every three years by reviewing the most current updates of those model codes. That three year rhythm is why an edition number changes on a predictable cycle rather than when a new NEC is printed.

The exam edition is a separate question

Don't read the enforced code edition off the exam, or the other way round. The department's approved reference list for the electrical contractor examinations names NFPA 70, 2023 edition, as reference RN9, with the 2026 edition scheduled for August 21, 2027.

And county journeyman exams set their own references. Miami-Dade's exam description document ties its journeyman electrician exams to the 2017 National Electrical Code.

The fire side

The Florida Fire Prevention Code sits in rule chapter 69A-60 of the Florida Administrative Code. Rule 69A-60.003 adopts NFPA 1, the Fire Code, Florida 2021 edition, and rule 69A-60.004 adopts NFPA 101, the Life Safety Code, Florida 2021 edition, both effective 31 December 2023.

NFPA 70 isn't named in that chapter's rule titles. Fire alarm work still answers to the building code side for the electrical part and to the fire code for the rest.

Local changes layered on

Section 553.73 lets local governments adopt technical amendments more stringent than the state code, under conditions. A handful of Florida jurisdictions have used it for electrical work, and Broward County keeps its own administrative chapter.

Is there a Florida Building Code electrical volume?

Not today. The Commission's page says NFPA 70 is adopted in Chapter 27 of the Building volume and NFPA 70A in Chapter 33 of the Residential volume.

Which NEC edition does Florida enforce?

We couldn't confirm the edition named inside the 8th Edition from a page we fetched, because the ICC Digital Codes chapters render through script. Ask your building department for the edition your permit is reviewed against.

How often does Florida update the code?
