Florida Building Code 9th Edition: Where It Stands Now

The 9th Edition is in development, the Commission's own page gives meeting and comment period dates rather than an effective date, and no draft text is posted to read. Separately, the exam reference list already has a date for the 2026 NEC.

What the 9th Edition is

The 2026 update to the Florida Building Code is the 9th Edition, and the Commission's process page runs its code review against the 2024 changes to the International Codes.

The Commission's code page still shows the 8th Edition (2023) as the code in force, with one link out to the materials for the 2026 update and its tracking charts. There's no draft 9th Edition posted there to read.

The dates the Commission has published

What the page doesn't print is an effective date for the 9th Edition. We're not going to guess one. Section 553.73 sets the three year update rhythm, and the 8th Edition took effect December 31, 2023, but a rhythm isn't a published date.

What it means for electrical work

The National Electrical Code reaches Florida through the building code, adopted in Chapter 27 of the Building volume and Chapter 33 of the Residential volume for NFPA 70A. So whichever NFPA 70 edition the 9th Edition names is what changes when it takes effect.

We couldn't confirm the NFPA 70 edition named in the 8th Edition from a page we could read, because the chapter that carries it renders its text through script and returned nothing. There's no 9th Edition text posted to check either. When the Commission publishes it in a document we can read, this page gets it.

The exam side already has a date

The exam question is settled and separate. The department's approved reference list names NFPA 70, 2023 edition, as reference RN9 today, and gives August 21, 2027 as the date the 2026 edition takes over.

Several other titles move on the same day: the 2025 OSHA volume, the 2025 NFPA 72, the 2026 NFPA 780, the 2023 National Electrical Safety Code, the 2014 UL 681, the 2023 Lineman's and Cableman's Handbook, the 2025 NTC Blue Book and the 2025 Florida Contractors Manual.

What to watch, and where

Watch the Commission's 2026 code development process page for the second comment period closing and for an effective date. Watch the department's reference list for any change to the August 21, 2027 date.

And watch your county, because a local technical amendment can arrive on its own schedule under section 553.73, no more than once every six months and effective thirty days after publication.

Can I read the draft now?

Not as a full draft. The Commission's code page shows the 8th Edition (2023) and links the materials for the 2026 update, including the tracking charts. We did not find a posted 9th Edition text on it.

Which NEC edition will Florida adopt next?

We couldn't confirm the NFPA 70 edition named in the 8th Edition from a page we could read, and no 9th Edition text is posted to check. The Commission's own NEC page tells readers to consult the volumes.

When does the exam move to the 2026 NEC?

The department's reference list gives August 21, 2027 as the date the 2026 edition takes over, along with several other reference titles.

How often does Florida update the code?

Section 553.73 requires an updated Florida Building Code every three years, adopted by reviewing the most current updates of the model codes it's built on.
