Florida Electrical Exam Day: ID, Timing and Check In

Two things end a Florida exam day before it starts: identification the center won't take, and a reference book that breaks the binding or tab rules. Both are in the department's booklet and both get checked at the door.

The identification rule

The booklet asks for two valid forms of signature identification, one of which has to be government issued. Bring your authorization notice and your candidate identification number as well.

Check the names match. A signature identification that reads differently from the name on your authorization is the kind of thing that gets sorted out at a counter while your appointment time passes.

The clock, from booking to check in

You become eligible to schedule within 72 hours after your application is approved. The booklet asks you to call at least five business days before the date you want.

Report to the test center thirty minutes before the scheduled examination. That half hour is check in, not study time.

Cancel at least two days before the exam or you forfeit your fees, and missing an exam may forfeit them as well. The vendor's own Florida page puts it as two full calendar days before the test to avoid a penalty.

What you carry in

These are open book examinations and the department strongly encourages candidates to bring the approved references. What you may not bring is scratch paper, formulas or study notes.

Permanently attached tabs are allowed in reference books. Post-it Notes, pull-off labels and removable tabs are not. A PDF reference has to be printed and bound in a spiral notebook or a binder with three or more holes.

Where the centers are

The examinations are computer based and the department says they're available on a daily basis at testing sites. The vendor doesn't publish a static list of Florida centers on its electrical program page, and the department's booklet doesn't print Florida cities either.

Both point at the vendor's locator instead. We won't print a center list we couldn't confirm, so use the locator on the vendor's Florida page and confirm the address on your appointment confirmation.

Whichever center you pick, plan the drive around the thirty minute check in rather than the start time.

Two papers, two sittings

The certified route has a technical and safety paper and a business paper. The technical paper for the unrestricted scope is 100 questions in five hours. The business paper is 50 questions in two and a half hours.

A passing score stays good for three years from the date of the examination, so the two don't have to happen in the same week.

After the paper

The pass mark is 75 percent on both sections. A failed business section can be retaken up to three attempts before you reapply. A failed technical section means reapplying to the department for a new authorization to test.

The retake fee is $67.25 and the application fee that got you here is not refundable. The retakes page walks the reapplication.
