Miami FL Electrician License: Classes and County Cards

Miami-Dade runs one of the busiest local licensing boards in Florida, with journeyman and master levels the state does not issue. Here's what the county asks for, what the state asks for, and where to train.

The license a Miami electrician needs

The license Florida issues is a contractor license from the Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board, certified for the whole state or registered for one jurisdiction. While you work for somebody who holds one, s. 489.503 covers you as an employee inside their scope.

The county layer is separate and it matters here. Section 489.5335 leaves journeyman licensing to counties and municipalities, and Miami-Dade uses that authority fully.

The Construction Trades Qualifying Board

The Construction Trades Qualifying Board operates under Chapter 10 of the Miami-Dade County Code in two divisions, and Division B handles electrical, mechanical and plumbing. Division B meets Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, monthly through 2026 with an August recess, at the Stephen P. Clark Government Center, 111 NW 1st Street, 18th floor. Board Administration is 786-315-2574.

The county's electrical license page names four journeyman levels: journeyman electrician, journeyman burglar alarm, journeyman fire alarm and journeyman sign electrician. Qualifying takes three years of proven experience in the trade or craft, or the education equivalent, or a combination, with no more than half of it education, plus an examination.

The contractor categories above them each need a matching master as the qualifying agent: burglar alarm, fire alarm, general electrical and low voltage, the last covering systems not exceeding 77 volts. Cards are issued by the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources, Contractor Licensing, 786-315-2880, at the Herbert S. Saffir Permitting and Inspection Center, 11805 SW 26 Street.

Note the gap: the county asks for three years, while s. 489.5335 sets a state floor of a registered apprenticeship or 12,000 hours plus a proctored exam. The county page does not reconcile the two, so ask the board how it will read your file.

The county exam

Miami-Dade tests through Prov. The county's exam description document gives the journeyman electrician exam 75 questions in 3 hours, referencing NFPA 70, 2017 edition, and the American Electrician's Handbook, 16th edition. The journeyman sign electrician exam has the same shape.

Master level exams run two parts, business and technical, and the county's exam categories document lists master electrician, master burglar alarm, master fire alarm, master sign electrician, master low voltage, master electric utility and master TV antenna. Applicants provide letters from every employer they claim, and the board verifies them.

The county exam and the state exam are not on the same code book. The state contractor exam references the 2023 NEC; the county journeyman exam document names the 2017 edition.

Where to train in Miami

The state exam and where you sit it

The state exams run through Pearson VUE as computer based tests. DBPR says candidates can schedule within 72 hours after approval, by phone or through the Florida electrical program page.

Pearson VUE does not publish a static list of Florida centers for this program. Seats are found through the program test center locator, and the candidate information booklet points candidates the same way, so we're not printing an address we could not confirm.

What the work pays in Miami

O*NET, republishing Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data, gives electricians in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metro area a median of $28.19 an hour, or $58,630 a year.

Miami does not have a wage area of its own in that data. The metro figure covers Miami, Hialeah and Fort Lauderdale together, and it sits above the Florida median of $27.52 an hour.

Get the hours and the employer letters in order early, because Miami-Dade verifies them with every employer you name.

Then pick your lane: the county journeyman exam on the 2017 book the county names, or the state contractor exam on the 2023 book the reference list names. Plenty of people do both, in that order.

Does my Miami-Dade journeyman card work in Broward?

Section 489.5335 requires Florida counties and municipalities to recognize a journeyman licensed by another Florida county or municipality. Broward says it reciprocates with all Florida counties and asks the issuing county to send your exam score and testing agency in a sealed letter.
