Every certification area sits the same business paper. It's 50 questions in two and a half hours, open book, and the Florida Contractors Manual is the book it's written around. Three failed attempts and you reapply.

One paper, every area
The vendor codes it BZ and the booklet lists it as Business for all areas. Whether you're sitting for the unlimited scope, a residential specialty, an alarm license or a sign license, this is the same paper.
The department describes the examination as two parts, technical and safety, and business. This is the business half.
The paper itself
50 questions. Two and a half hours. Open book. Three minutes a question, the same rate as the technical paper.
The pass mark is 75 percent. A passing score stays good for three years from the date of the examination, which matters if your technical paper and your business paper are months apart.
The book it turns on
The Florida Contractors Manual, 2021 edition, is reference RN50 on the approved list and it's allowed in every certification area. The list notes that a bound PDF index is permitted with it.
The OSHA volume, reference RN7, is also listed for every area. The 2025 Florida Contractors Manual and the 2025 OSHA volume are both scheduled to take over on August 21, 2027.
Anything you bring has to meet the binding and tab rules on the book rules page. A PDF reference has to be printed and bound before it comes in the room.
Three attempts, then you reapply
The booklet is specific about this section: candidates are allowed three attempts, and after three unsuccessful attempts the candidate has to reapply. That's different from the technical paper, where each failure sends you back for a new authorization.
A retake is $67.25. The application fee that got you here is not refundable.
Who can skip it
The board says an applicant who already holds a current certified license in another category doesn't have to retake the business and finance exam.
Some out of state examinations also cover it. On the board's endorsement matrix, Nevada's Management Survey was found substantially similar to the Florida business exam in April 2020, Oklahoma's electrical business exam in April 2020, and South Carolina's electrical business management and law exam in April 2020. In each of those the Florida technical exam is still required.
It runs the other way too. Colorado's electrical contractor technical exam, the NASCLA Residential Electrical exam and the Texas Master Electrical exam were each recognized on the technical side with the Florida business exam still required. The reciprocity page has the full table.
Money and booking
The certified examination application to the department is $263.25. The computer based exam fee paid to the vendor is $123.75. A retake is $67.25. The board's page says application fees are not refundable.
Pearson VUE takes the booking on 888.204.6230 or online. Cancel or reschedule at least two full calendar days ahead or you forfeit the fee.
How to prepare for it
This is a lookup paper more than a memory paper. The candidates who run short of time are the ones who haven't tabbed the manual by subject before they walk in.
Work the technical side on the free practice test and use the clock the same way: read, decide which book, turn to the tab, answer, move.
