Limited Energy Specialty is the low voltage scope: closed circuit television, central music, intercom, electric locks and fiber optic. The paper is 100 questions over five hours, open book, and the business paper goes with it.

What the scope covers

The board's specialty list carries low voltage system specialist as class code 069. The Know Your Scope chart names the certified scope Limited Energy System Specialty and describes it as limited energy closed circuit television, central music and video, intercom, electric locks and fiber optic.

The registered ET license covers limited energy systems inside one jurisdiction, alongside residential, lighting maintenance, sign and utility line work.

The paper itself

100 questions. Five hours. Open book. The vendor codes it LE. The pass mark is 75 percent, a passing score stays good for three years, and the 50 question business paper applies.

Rule 61G6-6.002 is the specialty electrical contractor certification examination rule, with an effective date of 24 March 1999.

• The NTC Blue Book Low Voltage Systems, 2020, from the National Training Center, listed as RN39.
• Telecommunication Wiring, third edition 2001, listed as RN30.
• NFPA 72, 2019, as RN10; NFPA 780, 2017, as RN12; NFPA 101, 2018, as RN13.
• NFPA 70, the 2023 National Electrical Code, as RN9, plus the OSHA volume RN7 and the Florida Contractors Manual RN50.

The list also carries the dates future editions take over. The 2026 National Electrical Code is scheduled to become the reference edition on August 21, 2027, and several of the other books move on the same date.

Two records on the board's endorsement matrix land here. California's C-7 qualifies for Limited Energy Specialty, determined in March 2001 and November 2019. North Carolina's Low Voltage license qualifies for Limited Energy Specialty, determined in March 1998.

The board has no reciprocal licensing agreement with any state. What it has is this list of examinations it has found substantially equivalent for licensure by endorsement.

Money and booking

The certified examination application to the department is $263.25. The computer based exam fee paid to the vendor is $123.75. A retake is $67.25. The board's page says application fees are not refundable.

Pearson VUE runs the paper for the department. It's computer based and the department's page says it's available on a daily basis at testing sites, so you're picking a date rather than waiting for a sitting. You become eligible to schedule within 72 hours after your application is approved.

Book by phone on 888.204.6230 or online through the vendor's Florida page. The booklet asks you to call at least five business days before the date you want.

How to prepare for it

Limited energy work sits in its own part of the code book and the article numbers there were rebuilt in the recent editions. Read the limited energy and communications material in the book you'll carry, which is the 2023 edition, and don't rely on a summary written for a different printing.
